Traditional art forms are still produced in rural Southern Africa and are as much an integral part of daily life as they were centuries ago. Traditional divisions of labour, with men as carvers and women making beadwork and clay, are no longer strictly observed due to changing times. Historically certain families were associated with a particular craft and these skills would be passed to their sons and daughters. This is no longer the case and communities now share their skills in recognition of the need for economic growth.
